MOLECULAR TESTING
UTI Pathogen Detection
A clearer picture starts with a closer look. Molecular testing looks for the genetic material of organisms targeted by a urinary pathogen panel.

THE CLINICAL QUESTION
What this testing
can help explore.
Pure Diagnostic’s UTI testing service uses real-time polymerase chain reaction, or qPCR. The service information includes pathogen identification and resistance-marker testing. Ask the laboratory for the current organism and marker list when considering an order.
Purpose
To provide laboratory information for a clinician evaluating a suspected urinary tract infection. Selection of a panel depends on the clinical question and the patient’s circumstances.
- Laboratory approach
- Real-time PCR (qPCR)
- Specimen planning
- Confirm the required urine collection kit, volume and transport conditions with the laboratory.
- Availability & reporting
- Contact the laboratory for current panel options, turnaround time and reporting arrangements.
Understanding the report
The report identifies the targets detected within the ordered panel. Your clinician considers the findings together with symptoms, medical history and other information.
Know the limits
A test can only assess the targets included in its panel. Do not treat a resistance-marker finding as a complete treatment recommendation; ask your clinician how it affects the care plan.
Before you order
- Which organisms and resistance markers are included?
- Which collection device and specimen volume are required?
- What transport conditions and delivery arrangements apply?
- When should the ordering team expect the report?
Prepare your questions, then confirm the details through the laboratory’s ordering process.
Create an order worksheetCommon questions
Is this the same as a urine culture?
No. The published Pure service uses molecular detection. Ask the ordering clinician which testing approach is appropriate and whether any additional testing is needed.
Does the website recommend an antibiotic?
No. The ordering clinician is responsible for interpreting the report and deciding on treatment.
