PATIENT GUIDE

Preparing for a laboratory test

A useful appointment begins with a few practical questions.

YOUR PREPARATION MAP

Four questions before collection.

Select a question to see what to discuss with the ordering team.

Start with the reason for testing

Ask the ordering clinician what question the test is intended to address and how different results might affect the next step.

Get the instructions for your specific test

Requirements differ. Obtain the current collection, preparation and timing instructions from the laboratory or ordering team. Do not assume that instructions for one test apply to another.

Make a short question list

Ask about collection arrangements, the expected reporting process and any cost or coverage questions before the sample is collected.

Keep your care team informed

Tell the team about any difficulty following the instructions. Do not change medicines because of information on a website; ask the prescribing clinician.

Questions to bring to your next conversation

  • What is the purpose of this test?
  • What preparation and specimen instructions apply to my order?
  • Who can answer cost and insurance questions?
  • How will I receive the result and discuss it?
